Richard Matthews has assumed the role of chairperson of the Stewardship of the Environment Committee (SEC). Richard replaces Rev. Elizabeth Welch, the former Parish Priest at St. Andrews and St. Mark’s in Dorval.
Rev. Elizabeth was instrumental in the passage of the fossil fuel divestment motion in the Diocese of Montreal. In addition to her environmental interests Rev. Elizabeth has served as a chaplain in both hospitals and prisons. She obtained a Masters in Religious Studies with a Specialization in Biomedical Ethics from McGill University. Rev. Elizabeth is currently the Rector at St. Georges Anglican Church in Victoria, BC where she lives with her wife, and their daughter.
Richard takes over for Rev. Elizabeth having been a member of the SEC for more than five years. He cosponsored the fossil fuel divestment motion and crafted the support strategy. He made the case for divestment that included a presentation at synod. Richard is also the social media coordinator for the SEC and St. Philips Church where he served as Rector's Warden (2014 - 2016).
As a consultant, writer, and father of two young children Richard is passionate about protecting the environment and climate action. Richard is also the owner of The Green Market Oracle and he is in the process of developing a podcast series in partnership with PlanetWatch for 3BL media's Triple Pundit.
